Biomass is a renewable resource with great application potential, with the characteristics of wide sources, abundant reserves and low prices. The preparation of activated carbon using biomass as raw materials is an important way to promote the resource utilization of biomass materials. This paper mainly reviews the research on the preparation of activated carbon using biomass as raw materials and the regulation of its microstructural characteristics such as specific surface area, pore structure and surface properties through preparation conditions. It focuses on the effects of biomass composition, carbonization and activation conditions (such as carbonization method, type of activator, amount of activator and reaction residence time) on the microstructural characteristics of activated carbon, and discusses in detail the regulation mechanism of pore structure and surface properties by commonly used activators (such as water vapor, CO2, ZnCl2, H3PO4, KOH, etc.). Finally, the application of activated carbon with different microstructural characteristics is summarized.
